Two types of motors
PSC Motor
Many systems use a blower motor called a PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motor. The
PSC motor is a basic motor included in basic heating and cooling systems. It typically has one setting: ON. It turns on when the thermostat tells it to, and turns off when the house’s internal temperature reaches the set temperature.
PSC motor disadvantages:
- Noise
- Draftiness
- Inefficiency
ECM Motor
The
ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) is significantly more energy efficient than the PSC motor. The ECM is a variable-speed blower motor, designed to operate continually at low speed and then turn to high speed when the thermostat indicates. Running continuously keeps the air circulating in your house, which helps prevent temperature swings and draftiness in your home and makes your air filter and humidifier work better.
ECM benefits:
- Quietly ramps up to its high setting
- Uses 30-50% less electricity than PSC motors
- Results in lower energy bills
